In this powerful solo performance, Maryum reflects on formative moments in her life, and how her father’s parenting and convictions left a lasting imprint on her identity and self-worth. Through poignant and occasionally humorous autobiographical stories, she unveils her journey as a Black, Muslim girl coming of age in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement. It’s an exploration of identity challenged by judgment and intolerance.

Float is a heartfelt gem that takes your emotions on a beautifully unexpected ride. Maryum seamlessly morphs into multiple characters, each with striking ease and undeniable presence. This transformative play moves audiences to laugh, cry, and embrace deeper cross-cultural understanding. Maryum hopes her play will foster empathy and respect across boundaries within humanity that too often divide us.

In 2022, Maryum debuted a staged reading of Float in California, earning high marks in post-show surveys and generating strong audience interest. Building on that success, she continued developing the play and premiered its first full performance in Chicago on April 5, 2025, for a one-night-only event. The next phase of development includes performances at universities and colleges, leading to a final stage of touring Float at theaters across the country and internationally.
